I have had travel injections in both arms last week and felt pretty rough as a result – which never happens I usually feel fine! To make me feel better I sat down with a hot cup of coffee, snuggled under a blanket, put on a film and felt so much better. It got me thinking about the simple pleasures in life – those simple non-extravagant things that just make you feel happy.
Here are my top 10:
1. A hot cup of coffee
After Jake was born having a hot cup of coffee became a distant memory! More so because I would make it and forget about it! Now that he is older, I am not feeding him anymore and he has decent naps I am loving drinking my coffee hot again – savour every sip!
2. Clean bed sheets
There is no better feeling than getting into bed when you have put fresh sheets on – the smell, the feel – bliss! Especially if freshly showered and shaved legs – girls you know exactly what I mean!
3. A tidy organised cupboard
I love a good clean out, sort out and tidy up. My cupboards quickly get essay and overflowing so I find it quite satisfying sorting them out and knowing where everything is. The most recent cupboard I did was the long overdue under hob cupboard. It had become very neglected, so I spent a good few hours pulling everything out, cleaning the shelves, throwing out any out of date jars, and working out how to re-organise it with baskets and containers. Makes me smile every time I open the cupboard now!
4. Washing and drying my hair
Drying my hair after washing it is something else since having Jake which I haven’t done as frequently as I used to. A lot of the time I just left it to dry naturally as I would run out of time before he woke up from his nap or I just ran out of energy! I love the feeling of having freshly washed and dried hair though, especially when you have used nice shampoo and you catch the smell of it throughout the day.
5. Feet up, Netflix on
No better feeling than putting Jake to bed, having dinner and then sitting down with Rich, putting my feet up and switching on Netflix…or Prime…or iPlayer…and watching something good! Even better if I have a glass of wine or pink gin in my hand.
6. Making my little boy giggle
The BEST sound in the world is making Jake giggle! He has a big loose your sound giggle when you tickle and kiss him around his rib cage. Makes my heart so full.
7. The fresh smell that a downpour gives outside
This is an odd one but I love the smell outside after it has rained heavily in the spring/summer…I’m sure you know what I am talking about - it’s that fresh smell. However, I only like the smell if I haven’t been caught in the downpour!
8. Fresh flowers
I am a faux plant but real flower girl. New fresh flowers are just so pretty and really brighten up a room. My favourites are peonies, and hydrangeas.
9. Getting into bed after a long day
After a long day either at work or at home with Jake I love getting into bed, turning off the lights (having a last quick scroll through Instagram!) and then going to sleep - just the best! Especially when Jake sleeps through the night – waaahhhh!!
10. Reading a book
I feel that I don’t read a lot of fiction books anymore. The only time I really do is when I am on an aeroplane, on holiday or a long car journey (and not the one driving!). My sister in law bought me Postscript by Cecelia Ahern for Christmas which is the follow up to P.S. I Love You (the book is so much better than the film, although I did like the film it just doesn’t stack up to the book). Taking some time to read a bit every week is making me very happy rather than doing my usual trick of starting a book, then not picking it up again for months so completely forgetting what I had read!
