Genius storage solutions

Writer: Faye ActonFaye Acton

I am at that stage in life where a really good storage solution makes me very happy!

I love a good solution to organise and make spaces look tidier. If you type in storage solutions into Google or search storage on Instagram you will find hundreds of different ideas! Some are brilliant, others are questionable…! Some just wouldn’t work for your space and others are pretty genius for your space!

I have had a look round my house and come up with 10 really simple, but in my opinion, genius solutions that I use.

"Simple but genius!"

1. IKEA shelf separators

I have recently sorted out my food cupboard under the hob and the cupboard with all my plates and bowls.

The variera shelf dividers have been brilliant to help create layers and give me more space.

2. Storage boxes with lids!

LIDS!!! Why have I only just started to use storage boxes with lids?!! They can stack – genius!!!

I’m sure this is not revolutionary to anyone reading this, but it has been to me!

I have used the IKEA white kuggis range for in the bathroom under the sink and in our new entertainment unit.

Then I found some grey ‘diamond storage’ boxes in Home Bargains which I bought in small, medium and large sizes to organise the utility room.

I of course then made labels to go on each so I know what is in what!

3. Fridge boxes

Not just useful in the fridge! In fact I only have one in the fridge as it actually takes away space. Where I have used them is under the sink as they come in different widths so can slot into narrow spaces and being clear you can see exactly what is in them!

Mine are from Poundland and Home Bargains but you can get them from most places. Amazon have a huge range.

4. Addis under sink storage

This is actually the most genius solution in the house.

It is a frame which comes with removable inserts to create two shelves to fit around the spaghetti junction of pipe work under the sink…absolutely brilliant!

I of course then put everything in baskets and fridge boxes (see previous point!) to organise it further.

5. Tension rods I can’t remember where I read this tip but it’s so good – tension rods for wardrobe shoe storage.

I used to keep my shoes in the boxes and stack the boxes up or just try and strategically place them on top of each other…like jenga!

I found the tip to use two tension rods in the bottom of the wardrobe to create a shoe rack.

You can position them at the height you need and stagger the two for heels.

Just make sure you put them on tight enough or they will fall in the middle of the night and nearly give you a heart attack - yep this happened to me!

6. Letter rack

Letters, cards, invites, junk mail – so much comes through the door and tends to pile up on the hall table.

A letter rack has been the answer to the problem – looks pretty and is so functional. Any post that needs filing or actioned is put into the rack and then the idea is that every week I will sort it out properly.

In reality it tends to stay there for a while…a long while…but at least it’s not scattered all over the table!

I like that this one has open ends so it doesn't matter the length of the envelope, it will fit. Even better was the price - £2.79!

7. Drawer dividers

The chest of drawers in my bedroom is IKEA and as IKEA is the shop of storage dreams they of course make drawer dividers to fit perfectly inside.

Apart from being a perfect fit they are brilliant for separating out knickers, bras and tights and socks.

The larger ones are great for storing some of the seasonal must haves like bikinis, hats and scarves etc to keep them all separate. I have them under the bed, in the wardrobe and obviously in the drawers!

Mine are the SKUBB.

8. Under shelf basket

These are a great way to make use of the usually unused space under shelves in cupboards.

I got one to make the most of the cupboard in the utility room and now I want to get more to use in the kitchen.

If you have a big space you can double up the baskets too!

They come in all different lengths and depths. Just make sure you measure the length of your shelf first...this tip is from experience...I didn't at first and bough one which was way too small!

9. Sticky hooks

I have tried so many different sticky hooks as most of them just fall down as soon as I hang something on them.

However, these from Amazon are amazing!

They stay sticky and hold weight – can’t recommend them more highly.

10. Cable tidies and ties

I have definitely not saved the best until last here, this is probably the most boring, so I apologise! Over the past few months I have actually used quite a lot of cable ties!

My 1 year old is into everything at the moment and will find anything that he shouldn’t so I have been more aware of what he can get at which is dangerous and one of the big things is chargers!

I have used self-adhesive cable tidies on the side of our bedside tables to thread the cables through and keep them off the floor – also makes it easier to get to which is a bonus!

Cable ties have also come in very handy to group together a bunch of wires to keep out of the way of small hands. They have also helped to make the area behind the TV look tidier as we have the ariel cable, tv cable, amazon fire stick cable, PlayStation cable all looking like they are playing a game of twister!

So that is everything I wanted to share!

There were others like clear plastic make up storage, baskets (if you know me you know I love a good basket!), stair basket, double bin etc but I thought the 10 I have spoken about were the most useful! If you found anything interesting or think that you can use any of the tips in your home or have any tips to share with me then please leave me a comment and head over to my Instagram to let me know.
